From the 1930's-1970's Breitling was a leading producer of chronographs for the aircraft industry. The Navitimer, launched in 1952, provided pilots with a chronograph designed specifically for air navigation purposes.The design continues to this day with added improvements. The Cosmonaute model was worn by Scott Carpenter aboard Aurora 7 space capsule. In 1965, Breitling developed the first self-winding chronograph. Developed over more than thirty years, it is now used on the Chronomat models.
