Louis Cartier (1875-1942). Created the Santos-Dumont, for the Brazilian aviator Santos- Dumont, who wanted to know the time quickly when he was at the controls of his plane. Cartier created its first water resistant watch for the Pasha of Marrakech who wanted to be able to bathe in his swimming pool without losing the notion of time. Cartier's main distinguishing features are the Roman numerals, the beaded or flat-edged winder topped off with a sapphire, and the blued steel hands. The movements are made by Cartier's master craftsmen. Some of these have highly complex movements such as the Tourbillon, the Minute Repeater, and the Perpetual Calendar. All Cartiers are masterpieces of technique and aesthetics.
